Dubai has no time for resting for long, and La Mer Beach Dubai is no exception. Once a colourful, mural-covered coastal meeting place of sorts, it’s gradually become something more upscale. The South has been transformed into a luxury dining and beach club called J1 Beach, while the North continues with its relaxed, open air feel and La Mer heritage. Here‘s what you need to know before you go.

Where Is La Mer Beach Dubai?

Located in the heart of Dubai’s most coveted residential area of Jumeirah 1, quiet, relaxed and a beach where you can feel like you are part of the community every day.

The area has the following special features:

  • 2.5 km of Arabian Gulf Coastline, plenty of room even on busy days.
  • Located between the two most beautiful waterfront areas of Dubai, Pearl Jumeirah and Jumeirah Bay
  • In easy reach of Dubai city centre, one of the easiest beach destinations in Dubai!

This beaches nearly the backyard of the Jumeira the residents, a place for an early morning run, a relaxed stroll along the sands in the evening, and a drive out for the weekend.

Beach Timings: When You Can Visit

There is flexible opening hours throughout the week at the Beach:

  • Sunday to Wednesday: 10:00 AM – 10:00 PM
  • Thursday to Saturday: 10:00 AM – 12:00 AM (midnight)

Note that swimming is only allowed until dusk! Following this, the water and sunbeds shut down for the night, while the rest of La Mer continue to operate. The shops, spas, cafe and restaurants keep going into the evening.

Most visitors would naturally call it a day about 6:30 PM and turn to dinner or a walk along the promenade; that isn’t such a bad way to cap a day anyway.

Getting There

Regardless of where you are coming from, it’s not difficult to reach La Mer.

If you’re driving:

  • From Abu Dhabi: Follow Jumeirah Street, keep left when go over Mercato Mall till you reach 39A Street.
  • From Sharjah: Jumeirah Street until Jumeirah Mosque turn right between the mosque to reach 2A road.

If travelling by public transport:

  • There is also a regular service from the RTA Buses passing along the Jumeirah Beach Road onto the Routes 8, 9 and 88, all 3 of them are around the entrance area.
  • By metro: No metro station directly, but the closest metro station is Business Bay Metro. Then you can take a bus #9 or a short cab to go to the beach.

Beach Facilities

La Mer has all the tools for a pleasant day on the beach, much more than a typical beach destination. The facilities cater to visitors who are in for a few hours or a day-long outing:

  • After swimming, there are clean and easy-to-access changing rooms.
  • On-site Prayer Rooms: Available for Muslim visitors
  • Valet Parking: Avoid the hassle of parking altogether!
  • With the Mobile Charging Boxes, you can keep your mobile phone charged for the whole day.

Restaurants

The J1 transformation has really sold me on this. Now home to some of the most well-known and esteemed restaurants in Dubai, La Mer Beach Dubai is home to some of the city’s biggest names.

  • Best spot for smokers and BBQ/grilled meat lovers is Kaftan Turkish Gourmet.
  • Smoky Beach: Strong smoky taste that is executed well, a must-have for smoked food enthusiasts.
  • Treez Cafe: A cool coffee spot for fresh coffee, cappuccinos and fresh light salads.
  • Bareburger: Easy, delicious fast food for families and friends.
  • The perfect dessert place for an ultimate sweet treat.
  • Roti Rollers: Traditional flavours with a warm, homestyle touch.

The North half still has cafes, juice bars and casual eateries, where a fresh juice and shawarma by the sea is just how you want it, and it won’t break the bank.

Notable Landmarks Nearby

A day at La Mer pairs naturally with the surrounding area:

  • Jumeirah Mosque: Excuse yourself to the Jumeirah Mosque when you arrive at La Mer. This beautiful mosque gives a guided tour to non-Muslims as well.
  • Burj Khalifa: Tallest building in the world with spectacular views from the 124th floor observation deck.
  • Dubai Mall: Countless shops plus many restaurants and cafes. An aquarium and KidZania. The mall is a few minutes away from the hotel.

Beach Activities

There’s more to do here than swim and eat:

  • Sunbeds and Cabanas: Hire a sunbed and relax while on the water. Or hire a private air-conditioned cabana; this is great for groups and families.
  • Water Sports: Don’t be put off because there’s loads of fun stuff to do in the water. Jet skis, kayaks, flyboarding, surfing, paddle boards, water bikes or donut riding, all ages and all levels of energy catered for.
  • Trampoline Park Hawa Hawa: A trampoline park that is entertaining for both kids and adults. A fantastic way to use up some energy or to cool down!
  • Sunset Strolling: Walk along the water’s edge following sunset this is one of the cheapest and most relaxing activities available at La Mer. The Gulf breeze, the abundance of beautiful light and Dubai‘s impressive skyline combine to make it one to remember.

Conclusion

La Mer Beach Dubai has been born, and not necessarily on its terms. The J1 Beach redevelopment has brought authentic quality, fantastic restaurants, sleek design, an alluring beach front. Unfortunately, some of the original friendliness and laid-back appeal have had to be sacrificed in the process. What‘s there, however, is still well worth a visit: clear waters, good eats, true pursuits, one of the Gulf‘s most naturally stunning beaches. If you go expecting that, you will not be disappointed.
