Lamcy Plaza was once a popular landmark in the city of Dubai and more than a shopping mall; it was a community. A weekend destination for families, a cinema experience for children, a place to buy something for every pocket. The tale of this great shopping mall is one that can be told in many different ways, and is, today, one of sadness, remembrance and calm but certain termination.
Dubai’s glittering mega-malls were nowhere near as common as they are now and the residents of Dubai’s everyday life preferred to go to the Plaza. This 5-story shopping complex opened in the mid-90s, and established itself as an “anything you want, without any frills” shopping destination that serves the community.
It was home to more than 150 stores ranging from fashion, electronics, home goods, toys and grocery. With a variety of shops located in the same place, the mall became a favorite amongst expats and locals as you didn’t need to break the bank to purchase anything under its roof. Shopping was not only a way to meet the demand of shopping, it was a lifestyle for an entire generation of Dubai residents.
The Plaza is situated off Sheikh Rashid Road in Oud Metha in between the Zabeel Park and Al Nasr Leisureland. To get there: Take this route.
It’s important to note that Lamcy Plaza is no longer a functioning mall. The March 2017 fire caused the mall to close forever. No online or in-store shopping hours, no open stores, no events are happening on the premises.
The mall will be open 7 days a week, from 10 AM to 10:30 PM Sunday through Wednesday and from 10 AM to midnight Thursday through Saturday, for reference.
If you are a fan of the place, then here is an in-depth assessment of what was so great about the Plaza in Dubai.
The Plaza was always in the top 10 most popular shopping malls in Dubai. It was segmented into separate sections with a food court, a multiplex cinema and a hyper market, all within one building. The five floors had terraces, a large central atrium, and ornate waterfalls that helped bring the lively ambiance to the mall. It was the place to find promotions and events, and stores would remain open late into night. Levi’s, Guess, Pierre Cardin and Guy Laroche are just some of the international fashion brands that made it a place for both price-savers and brand seekers alike.
Jewelry enthusiasts were in a shopper’s heaven at the Plaza. It would feature the largest jewellery shop in Dubai, Damas, as well as Pure Gold, Rivoli and Kini Diamond Jewellery. Another unique attraction for watch collectors was it being the only Mall in Dubai to sell Citizen Watches.
A visit anywhere where it didn’t go to Fun City, the mall’s family amusement center, was incomplete. Parents were free to shop as they wished, and children were entertained in a supervised and safe environment. It was also a family friendly place as it was providing nursery care.
The food court was a place where one could enjoy all kind of food including traditional Indian and Pakistani food, Arabic, western and fast food.
For all the necessities of daily living and more, Lamcy provided a one-stop shopping experience as Al Maya Hypermarket occupied the lower levels, allowing for a leisurely grocery shopping experience.
Most of the eating establishments were on the ground floor food court. It was a fusion of tastes for the various cultures of Dubai. Options included:

To plan for your trip keep these things in mind:
Lamcy Plaza is a story of tragedy and heartbreak, a part of the urban history of Dubai. It was a simple, industrious and cherished community landmark for more than 20 years. Each of these stores, each of the events and games at Fun City, each of the restaurants in the food court and the legendary cinema in this mall had a story. Although the 2017 fire has closed its doors, it can’t take away the warmth generated for so many families and residents.
The site is now in a new beginning after being put up for sale after years of dormancy for AED 188.7 million. No matter what comes up in its wake, the legacy of the Plaza will be in the hearts of those who loved it as their favorite mall.
